THE MICRO-TIGER ENTERS LONDON: 3rd Oct & 22nd Oct 2026

LONDON, UK — 19 September 2026 — FilmedUP has officially unveiled the definitive, re-indexed competitive lineup for the World Premiere of Pendulum Drift at the BFI-backed Thurrock International Film Festival on Saturday, 3 October 2026 (Block 3, 14:40–16:50).

Shehzad Afzal ,the former British Army Combat Engineer, will screen his 15-year narrative canvas along with international cinema masters and Oscar-pedigree Hollywood heavyweights at Purfleet Heritage & Military Centre (Magazine No. 5).

THE LONDON NARRATIVE FEATURE LINEUP

The Tale of the Tape: Pendulum Drift stands as the singular domestic UK narrative feature selected for the festival program, in an elite, multi-continental arthouse cinema showcase:

  • HE DOESN'T SLEEP (Iran) – Directed by Reza Jamali. A massive force on the international circuit, Jamali is a Tokyo International Film Festival Spirits of Asia Award winner and recipient of the Best Screenplay Yusr Award at the Red Sea International Film Festival, whose previous masterworks invaded the Critics' Pick Competition at Tallinn Black Nights (POFF). His latest 2025 feature brings heavyweight global arthouse prestige to the live bill.
  • THEY LOVED ME (Iran) – Directed by Mahmoud Kameli. A highly anticipated, 84-minute drama-documentary hybrid designed to challenge the limits of formal innovation and live hybrid cinematic structure.
  • GUARDIAN OF THE FIELD (Iran) – Directed by Narges Elahi. A tense, dark, psychological thriller mapping a remote village disappearance. Elahi's 104-minute multi-award-nominated work completes the elite three-front Iranian arthouse contingent.
  • PENDULUM DRIFT (United Kingdom) – Directed by Shehzad Afzal. The uncompromised 91-minute British insurgent. A gritty, neon-drenched concrete Mustard-Noir shot over 5 consecutive nights during the historic 2010 Icelandic volcanic ash cloud shutdown, entirely self-funded during a 15-year odyssey.

Pendulum Drift has already picked up 11+ accolades including:

  • 4 Best Feature Film awards
  • 2 Best Director awards
  • 2 Best Editing awards
  • 2 Best Sound Design awards
  • Best Original Score, awarded to Shaahan Afzal, Shehzad’s son

THE BLOCK 3 MARQUEE SANDWICH: HOLLYWOOD ROYALTY AT THE FORTRESS

Afzal’s micro-budget feature screens after the two elite, short film accompaniments featuring world-renowned mainstream talent:

  • SOMETHING POINTLESS – Directed by Asa Bailey. A heavily decorated festival favourite brought to life by the Oscar-winning producers of Curfew and the International Emmy-nominated producers of Tokyo Trial. The film features pristine cinematography from BAFTA-winning DOP Keefa Chan and boasts a powerhouse cast of British acting royalty, including BAFTA-winner Owen Teale (Game of Thrones), Olivier Award-winner Sophie Thompson (Gosford Park), and SAG Award-nominee Sule Rimi (Andor, The Day of the Jackal).
  • THE LONDONER – A high-end, atmospheric short-form piece framing the structural transition of the block.

SLOW CINEMA OFF A CLIFF EDGE

Shehzad's newly codified 'Pendulum Cinema' language, which weaves Deleuzian time-image philosophy, italian neorealism and Third Cinema resistance safely around a haunting midnight score composed by his son, Shaahan Afzal.

“It's a testament to the hard work of the cast and crew on those cold nights in April 2010," states filmmaker Shehzad Afzal. 'Pendulum Drift' was forged in total isolation from the margins, outside every system, through sheer personal will over 15 relentless years. There were no grants, industry co-signs, or safety nets. Just sheer will and determination to create art.”
