Scottish filmmaker Shehzad Afzal today announces the introduction of a new term and ethical framework in the field of digital humanities: Digitalitarianism. This concept emerges from Afzal’s ongoing research into Archival & Cultural Preservation and addresses a critical gap in contemporary vocabulary — the absence of language to describe the ethical necessity of digital and archival preservation.
Digitalitarianism arose following recent central platform deletions that erased portions of Afzal’s historical artistic press and creative record. In response, Afzal established a sovereign, deletion‑free archive on FilmedUP.com, ensuring the continuity of his 20‑plus‑year body of work.
Digitalitarian (noun): A person who recognises digital existence, creative archives, and online cultural footprints as meaningful modes of human identity requiring active preservation for historical and cultural continuity beyond the physical self. This recognition constitutes a form of modal existence within the digital realm.
Digitalitarian (adjective): Describing an ethical stance that treats digital creative output and historical data as culturally significant assets requiring protection from arbitrary erasure by centralised institutional platforms, where policy changes can result in the complete loss of digital identity and associated creative artefacts.
Digitalitarianism: The ethical framework asserting that digital erasure constitutes a direct loss of historical cultural memory and artistic lineage. It positions digital preservation as an essential cultural responsibility and establishes sovereignty, redundancy, and semantic continuity as foundational principles
Afzal’s forthcoming documentation will expand on the Digitalitarian Framework of Archival & Cultural Preservation, including sovereign archiving practices that are decentralised, immutable, and free from deletion.
